Mitchell says the miners went more than half way in a White House conference effort to resume work and settle the great coal strike.
President Mitchell of the United Mine Workers refuses to heed President Roosevelt’s call to end the coal strike. He cites lack of enforcement and distrust of operators, stating miners will not return to work without fair and impartial investigation and binding action. Additional notes describe confiscated ammunition in the anthracite district and Hamburg coal shipments reshipped to the United States.
Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania reports Rev P Nagle rector of St Nicholas German Catholic Church appeals to Reading Company president Baer to secure six days of work per week for miners. Baer replies willing to promise full time steady work except when prevented by accidents and asks how to best convey the assurance to workers.
Meeker dispatch reports tension after a fight with Harris near Rangely. Settlers move families to safety as Meeker stores mobilize arms and a messenger says Indians may have suffered a fatality in the Monday night encounter.
Sheriff Beley arrested Ross Miller and his uncle R A Miller after they arrived in Livingston with 15 quarters of beef sold for 8 cents a pound. The 14 year old boy implicated his father Lew Miller and the men in stealing cattle from neighbors. Evidence included hides and brands found buried near the loading site. Lew Miller is at large, suspected to have fled.
In Altoona North Dakota a Mennonite school teacher Henry I Toewes shot seven people during a board dispute. He killed trustee John Herbert and Abraham Rempel and wounded Peter Kebler’s two daughters and Rempel’s 11 year old daughter, before fatally wounding himself as pursuing neighbors closed in. Doctors report others fatally wounded or dying.
In Lewistown on October 9 a hearing on an assault in the first degree charge against Jake Stange proceeded before Judge Mac t. The case involves Stang and a man named Frederick breaking into Rit's house at Rockford in August, where Rit beat them leading to Frederick's death and Stang's injuries. County Attorney Belden led for the state. W E Cort defended Stang. Stang remained in district jail with bonds set at ouu.
Tamaqua Pa. Oct. James Burnham a striker was shot through the heart and killed instantly by a guard soldier at Brownsville near here early. Burnham reportedly loitered near a non unionist’s house partially destroyed by an explosion last week. The soldier ordered him to halt and the order was said to be disregarded.
About one thousand rounds of ammunition were seized at the Delaware and Hudson freight station in Oliphant by order of Colonel Watres of the regiment. The action followed a directive issued earlier in the day.
Helena Ort Sept 9 Chairman William Lindsay of the Republican state committee releases a statement asserting that on the 27th last month the party nominated William L. Holloway of Bozeman for associate justice of the Supreme Court. He says Holloway did not solicit, nor know of any other party nomination and accepted only the Republican nomination.
Georges Smerth son of a Chicago foundry man leapt from a seventh story fire escape behind the Arlington hotel in Seattle this afternoon. He died instantly as skull fractures and multiple broken bones resulted.
Andrew Carnegie's pledges of 75000 to Belfast and 85000 to Limerick for library establishments have been accepted.
New York reports multiple talks to settle the anthracite miners strike with no public results by 10 PM. Senators Platt and Quay and Governor Odell chaired sessions with operators and union leaders, while John Mitchell’s role remained under wraps as hopes for a quick accord lingered.
In New Orleans the streetcar strike worsened with 1690 militiamen in city, 700 at armories, crowds jeer dancers and attacks escalate. Soldiers hide to avoid risking kin among strikers. governor between troop deployment and peaceful settlement as two men were badly beaten and police intervened.
The 3rd anniversary of Chicago's big fire was observed with banquets by the Marquette and Lakeside clubs. Gov. Lafollette of Wisconsin and Secretary Moody spoke. ex-Gov Trautman stood in for Kansas. Bishop Spalding of Peoria gave the lakeside address on Illinois.
In Big Timber on October 9 the Northern Pacific agent reported that Gotchin claimed a robber took $35 or more from a shoe during his westbound Coast Limited ordeal. Police and hospital staff investigated while Gotchin, who attempted suicide Tuesday, remains alive and is said to be recovering with vitality.
