They claim a 76 percent rise translates to a one dollar per day increase for miners, with powder costs treated as bookkeeping to boost wages. They insist on the present terms and warn of no strikes while United Mine Workers pledge to stay active as preparations for a large parade and speech by President Mitchell proceed ahead of a potential settlement.
President Mitchell visited Shamokin amid a massive labor demonstration as 6 000 strikers lined up to hear him. He urged miners to send delegates to a convention to decide on the operators proposal and warned the strike could extend until both sides reach a decision. The procession passed peacefully and Mitchell's party moved on to Scranton for further events.
Wilkesbarre Pa Oct 1 leaders of the United Mine Workers in the anthracite region temper hopes for a Scranton convention settlement. Some fear the 16 percent wage increase may be temporary and wages could fall back after a market‑supply rebound. Not all miners share the doubt. many believe operators are sincere and the rise could be permanent. Operators acted individually, delaying a united view. a week may pass before theirs is known.
The Susquehanna Coal Company operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad will award a 10 percent net wage increase to its mine workers. The raise is expected to be announced after workers return to duty, as the firm avoids tying pay rises to the return.
The A J Van Kinkle estate and Calvin Pardee and partners posted 10 percent wage raises for Colrain and Milesville collieries and Lattimer mines respectively. Four operators, including G P Markle and associates, have not yet offered the raise but are expected to follow.
Reading Pennsylvania reports hundreds of railroad workers moved from anthracite stoppage to hauling soft coal from the West. Daily carloads reach Harrisburg and Williamsport and are rushed to Philadelphia and Port Liberty. Only 17 cars of hard coal moved today, vs a prestrike average of 400 cars.
In Mauch Chunk Pennsylvania about 900 workers walk out at Lehigh Coal and Navigation Nos. 10 and 11 collieries. Company officers strive to keep men at work while strike leaders vow to tie up the region within a day or two.
Harrisburg reports indicate the Williamstown collieries may shut down for lack of workers. Last night 350 men were out and today 1150 more stayed away. Workers march at intervals with no rioting so far.
A San Juan dispatch reports four people killed in a Guayama street riot that lasted through the night. Federals and Republicans clashed after a cafe shooting, with Americans restoring some order as armed bands roamed the town and more violence was feared ahead of elections.
President W. Y. Powell of the O R T was suspended from office today by the special convention of the grand division now in session in St. Louis. Only six votes were cast against his suspension.
In Georgetown Kentucky the Youtsey murder trial erupts as Arthur Goebel testifies Youtsey denied any contact with him. Youtsey bursts with protests shouting I am innocent while deputies restrain him and the judge postpones the case.
W. J. Bryan spoke at Quincy Camp Point Golden Carthage Macomb Abington Colesburg Yates City Elmwood Chillicothe Peoria Sparland Bureau La Salle Joliet and more. He attacked trusts militarism and imperialism, urged liberty for the Philippines, and defended campaign funding and railroad costs to travel the state.

The Arkansas class monitor launches planned at Newport News yards in November. Two monitors not yet launched are expected to be afloat before year end. Washington notes the launch has been set for December.
Consul General Holloway in St. Petersburg reports Washington informed that beyond recent Russian tariff ranges an excise duty is now collected on wine and tobacco, expanding the fiscal measures.
