A reported ambush in Alabama leaves Collins dead and others injured. Tom Hales is in custody as authorities state a nonresponsive government force failed to intervene. One man claims responsibility for the attack and its fatal outcome as investigators pursue details.
A Dolomite No 3 coal mine blast killed 84 workers, 20 white and 64 Black, collapsing a slope yard and firing dust via a broken cable. Rescue teams evacuated hundreds through manways as 60 injured face recovery. authorities station police at the morgue to identify missing relatives.
The Dublin report says Tom Hales chief irregular leader in Upton Cork was arrested. He allegedly commanded the ambush that killed Michael Collins and is tied to a Bandon platform fire during a treaty demonstration. His sister is linked to similar acts and he claimed responsibility.
Denied habeas corpus, Erskine Childers, a top lieutenant of Eamonn De Valera, is cited in Dublin as authorities tighten the Republican campaign against the Free State government. Continued on page 2.
Boise Idaho November 23 Harry Orchard convicted slayer of former Governor Frank Steunenberg was denied a pardon by the Idaho board of pardons in a special session. The board unanimously passed a resolution against freeing Orchard and also denied commutation of sentence. Orchard confessed to murdering Steunenberg with a dynamite bomb at the Caldwell home gate on December 30 1905.
Baron Sonnino former prime minister and foreign minister during World War I died in Rome at night. A leading authority on official and economic questions, he was trusted in emergencies. He formed cabinets in 1906 and 1910 lasting about 100 days and three months respectively.
Washington November 23 The nomination of Pierce Butler of Minnesota to be associate justice of the United States Supreme Court to succeed William R Day of Ohio who resigned was sent by President Harding to the Senate.
British and French officers of the inter allied control commission arriving to inspect a munitions depot at Ingolstadt Bavaria were attacked by civilians armed with clubs. One British officer was injured. No German soldiers were involved.
In Washington the administration shipping bill faced a five hour House debate with five speeches split three for and two against. Chairman Greene and Rep Edmonds led the pro Bill while Rep Nelson urged defeat. Bankhead attacked the measure, Watson defended it briefly, and Greene claimed the bill would create jobs retain 300 million dollars in freight payments and avert a wartime tonnage crisis.
Government aims to limit discussions to an Irish measure but faces disappointment. Laborites mobilize and actively push for broader unemployment policy actions amid parliamentary proceedings.

Four teen boys said to be committed to the state farm for the feeble minded at Orient Ohio were removed from Bentz Brothers strip mine at Turtle Creek by Pennsylvania state police and Ohio welfare agents. They were sent by train to Columbus amid protest from Bentz and without Allegheny county Sheriff Woodside’s knowledge.
Helena Mont Navy requests information on Noguchi's Rocky Mountain fever serum claim. Dr W F Cogswell secretary of the state health board says he has seen reports but knows nothing of the serum’s nature. If Noguchi's serum works, Montana and especially Bitterroot Valley would benefit as the fever spreads via tick bites.
In Washington on November 23 former French Premier Clemenceau faced bipartisan criticism in the Senate over Franco American relations and Paris policy. Senators Hitchcock and Borah assailed France on reparations and disarmament, while Sterling defended Clemenceau.
