In St Louis Missouri on November 14 1915 15 year old Gilbert Brooks confessed to stabbing 17 year old John Cottingham to death after Cottingham allegedly slapped him and knocked him down over a chewing gum dispute witnessed by Cottingham's mother. Brooks said Johns brother first struck Brooks over the gum before the fatal altercation with a pocket knife.
Charles R. Forbes tells the Senate committee investigators that witnesses Browbeaten him and that material facts were suppressed to prove his innocence. He cites Mortimer Williams and others as conspirers and defines perjury and subornation while insisting counsel has proof. Continued on page 2.
Fire tore through the council chambers in Marysville California late at night. The blaze went unnoticed until the ceiling of the fire department quarters above collapsed in flames. Firemen redirected hose streams to save equipment and remove several apparatus pieces.
Two bandits robbed bank messengers at an elevated station on Fifty-fifth Street and New Utrecht and fled with 436,07 in a car driven by a confederate. One messenger was killed before defending himself and the other died in a gun battle. The station cashier fainted in her cage.
Washington November 14 The Republican National Committee opens its fall effort to pick a 1924 convention city. Five cities Chicago Cleveland Denver Des Moines and San Francisco submit invitations as a sub committee led by David Mulvane reviews bids and considers presidential prospects for Coolidge Johnson La Follette Lowden and others. The committee meets December 11 to make a final selection.
A jury in the eighteenth district court at Cleburne Texas found Sheriff T W Davis of Somerville county guilty of accepting a bribe and fixed his punishment at four years in the state prison.
Moonshiners lament soaring hogshead prices under Prohibition as raids threaten their illicit output. Distillers recall 50 gallon barrels selling for four bits while current hogsheads fetch eight to ten dollars, risking ruin as revenue agents raid stills and destroy equipment. Affected moonshiners survey wreckage and salvage any usable staves, hoping for relief.
Mayor William D. Horgan leads a three day enrollment drive by the Butte chapter of the American Red Cross. Volunteers operate 10 am to 5 pm at Montana Power headquarters to enroll or renew members. The goal is 100 percent enrollment with broader humanitarian work planned for the coming year.
Col Richard A Eddy a West figure and founder of Missoula died in San Francisco at 86 after moving west in the 1840s with A B Hammond. He helped build Missoula and the Eddy Hammond Company led lumber mining and agriculture ventures. Survived by his widow Ida S Eddy and stepson Lewis of San Francisco.
Germany debates post occupation autonomy as Berlin officials warn that after November 29 the Ruhr and Rhineland may be left for local authorities to handle. Unemployment benefits in the regions total 200 million gold marks in the next ten days as the central government weighs economic autonomy versus direct intervention by occupying powers.
In Brooklyn during the Methodist Episcopal Church semi annual session a board member described the German mark mortgage deal. The church had mortgaged 606 million marks of property in Germany for about 2 million dollars in 1920 as the mark weakened. The board sacrificed by paying 116 thousand dollars cash to clear the mortgages, arguing a later payment would have cost about 300 thousand dollars more.
Bavarian students in technical and high schools and the university plan a large unarmed march against machine gun units. Officials report 30,000 students moved to enroll with a target of 50,000 willing to march and risk death if fired upon. Government circles fear orders to fire, though authorities say it may be necessary.
J J Prince of 611 West Fifth street Anaconda reports his wife Helen Prince 24 missing after leaving her mother's home in Butte on November 8. A letter and a phone call suggested she would return, but she vanished after visiting a Butte physician for medical treatment. Police notified as search continues.
In Dallas a five bishop committee of the Protestant Episcopal Church issued a report affirming belief in the virgin birth and other gospel tenets. The reaffirmation, adopted unanimously, declares such belief obligatory for every deacon priest or bishop in the church and challenges critics of literal interpretation.
A Berlin dispatch to the Daily Mail says Germany will repudiate the Versailles treaty and will not follow reparations or other clauses as long as French and Belgian forces occupy the Ruhr. The stance claims Ruhr occupation breaches the treaty, excusing Germany from observance while the occupation continues.
A dispatch reports that Germany will suspend all reparations claiming violation of the Versailles treaty by France as grounds to observe the agreement. The move is described as semi official and linked to alleged breaches of Varmailles.
The Freeman's Journal reports demobilization of the Free State army since June with peak strength around 52,000 in May. A rapid disbandment follows retrenchment measures and the investigation department will close after Saturday, with Oriel house as headquarters destined to shut.
Delegates from numerous Montana cities converge in Lewistown to draft a statewide program aimed at strengthening faith and cooperation for state welfare and prosperity. The non political conference, opening tomorrow at noon, will form committees on program and resolutions and continue through Saturday with broad civic, labor, and business group participation.
