In Butte a high stakes vote faces a clash between pro government stability and alleged Wobbly influence. Voters are urged to back decency and industry, with federal support including U S marshals and special deputies to prevent interference by the Wobblies. The outcome rests with the people of Silver Bow County.
The seven presidential hopefuls of 1920 await tomorrow's verdict as campaigns end and voters decide control of the senate house governors and legislatures. Weather forecasts warn of rain possible affecting turnout, with reports from state chairmen and the government weather bureau guiding last minute plans.
Butte residents can view authentic county state and national returns tonight at the Standard office on Main street. National totals will be posted at 6 o clock from eastern centers and complete county results from Silver Bow at 7 o clock. The Standard uses stereopticon displays and a full leased wire service linking New York Chicago and Washington for rapid national tallies. Public invited to use the fastest election night service offered.
John M. Barber, chairman of the county Republican committee, forecast Dixon and the statewide ticket winning by 12 000 to 15 000 votes. He singled out Silver Bow as close but expect a 500 to 1 000 vote margin for the GOP. Barber cautioned voters on voting machines noting the Republican ticket tops the ballot and second row is mostly blank. He warned some may vote incorrectly by marking the wrong boxes. About 27 000 Silver Bow residents are eligible to vote.
Governor Cox closed his campaign in Toledo pledging that tomorrow’s vote would secure U S entry into the League of Nations. He told crowds that victory would aid the cause, not the party, and predicted success as he urged approval of peace and better world relations.
Young America corps numbered in the thousands marched through Butte’s business district in November air. Banners streamers and school colors flew as students voiced pledged support for Measures 18 and 19. The orderly, businesslike procession drew attention among pedestrians. Continued on Page 2.
San Francisco November 1 Senator Hiram W. Johnson and Herbert Hoover both backing Harding charged each other in statements released tonight over the Republican nominee’s position toward the league.
New York November 1 Department of Justice agents arrested Albert Bailin of Brooklyn on a charge of sending a letter to the New York postmaster threatening to kill the postmaster and blow up the Woolworth Building unless all political and industrial prisoners are freed. He was held on five thousand dollars bail. Agents said Bailin believed the letter would help him obtain government work by exposing a fake plot.
Reports from across the country recount weekend violence. District Inspector Killigher was slain at Granard, a Tullamore sergeant died after being wounded, and two constables were killed at Killorglin. A constable fell at Abbey Dorney with two others wounded, another wounded at Causeway. Civilians seized and burned the Littleton police bar, looting arms. In Tralee a naval driver was wounded and the city hall and shops burned.
Last night crowds across Butte and surrounding districts heard final campaign words. The School of Mines students paraded for measures 18 and 1, with bands and a jazz orchestra on a delivery truck. Republicans spoke at Empress theater with A. J. Galen for supreme court justice, George Porter for state auditor, and Dr. T. C. Witherspoon.
A dispatch from London reports the Armenian town of Hadjin captured by Turkish forces after a siege since March, with about 10,000 Armenians killed or massacred as defenders were overrun.
In Sebastopol Crimea the Soviet advance battered General Wrangel’s center and threatened his wings. Melitopol and nearby areas have fallen back as Reds near Perekop. Wrangel fights a gallant defense and plans possible withdrawal across the Sivash. The Red army claims Perekop capture.
Marion Ohio November 1 Senator Harding awaits the nation’s decision with composure after his campaign effort. He will vote early, golf at a course, then return to hear returns. He reported encouraging outlook from battleground states Indiana New Jersey Illinois and New York and noted hopeful senatorial race signals.
