Vast crowds gather at Arlington National Cemetery for memorial ceremonies. The day features a national address from the President honoring fallen service members and reaffirming commitment to the nation’s veterans and military families.
Washington Memorial Day drew vast crowds as President Roosevelt delivered the oration in Arlington with a national salute by U S field artillery. The ceremony featured the decoration of Union and Confederate graves, music by the Marine Band, and a Lincoln Gettysburg address reading. Roosevelt urged restraint in war and praised civilian government for the Philippines while condemning lynchings at home.
Memorial Day services were held with a parade from Conda to Hill Cemetery where G A R veterans conducted ceremonies. The Post Commander delivered remarks honoring ten departed comrades and the local tribute reflected community remembrance.
Providence opened with clouds and sunshine as Anaconda held its Memorial Day ceremonies under G A R and Spanish American War veterans. A parade wound through Commercial avenue to Hill cemetery with a drum corps firing squad police K of P Lincoln school cadets and many students. The program opened with a hymn Gettysburg address prayer and wreaths before crowds at the monument.
President Scallon of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company arrives in Bozeman as Trail Creek coal properties known as the Hoffman group are purchased. The mines near Bozeman promise large coke production with a Gallatin county industrial lift. A boy train tour to inspect the site is planned for tomorrow.
The crew of the gunboat Eagle decorated the wreck of the Maine as officers and crew gathered in Havana on May 20. President Palma and veterans society sent wreaths to honor the battleship and its fallen sailors.

The ninth annual Montana State Sportsmen’s Association tournament opened in Anaconda with moderate weather and a large crowd. Ernest Klepetko, 14, starred with 20 straight in the seventh event and 41 of 50 in the blue-rock individual contest, winning first money. Matt Orr of Dillon won the blue-rock championship cup with 46 of 50, followed by Goddard Emmons and Dan Yancey.
Sylvester Pennoyer former Oregon governor 1886 1894 and mayor of Portland died at his home from heart trouble. Born 1831 in New York he rose from schoolteacher and lumberman to politics, known for opposing Chinese immigration and for refusing to meet President Harrison at the state line and telling President Cleveland to mind his own business.
Pittsburg Kansas May 30. The miners convention remains secretive as they draft a wage schedule to submit to operators next Monday. They offer full support to eastern strikers if no agreement is reached and warn of a possible general western strike.
The Big Timber mill suspended work as the wool supply ran out. The shutdown lasts a few days while the new clip arrives and machinery is overhauled. A large penitentiary order for several hundred yards of cloth for prisoners’ clothing is among pending contracts.
