Manila reports Major Henry T. Allen and his detachment drove insurgents from valleys near Catbalogon Samar on May 9, with 11 rebels killed and four wounded while four Americans died. Other engagements include Caterman on April 20 with one American dead, captured enemy near Pacin Laguna, and multiple small skirmishes across Panay Cebu Tayabas Zambales and Pangasin. Authorities say 14 enemy killed, 66 rifles seized, a Nordenfeldt gun and ammo destroyed. a rebel major surrendered at Liscom and influenced 46 men at Tarlac to surrender with 55 rifles.
Philadelphia May 2 Judee McPherson today faced charges in U S district court for violations of oleomargarine sale laws and has yet to stand trial on numerous alleged infringements. William Ketlinger was found guilty and sentenced to three months in prison. Thomas Heughey pleaded guilty and received davys and a 235 fine. The defendants are grocers who sold oleomargarine in stamped packages.
The secretary has sent to Congress the resolution of the chamber of commerce at San Juan Porto Rico urging reduction of the rice tariff from 32 to 10 cents per hundredweight until January 1 1906 and lowering olive oil duty from 80 to 10 cents per gallon until the same date.
Scranton reports on May 28 that 1500 Lehigh Valley railroad section workers along the Fayre to Jersey line have struck. They demand wage increases from 1.20 to 1.50 a day, affecting section-wide service.
