Judge Knowles sentences the embezzling cashier Matteson to ten years in the penitentiary at Deer Lodge. The district attorney does not intend to press the remaining eighty nine counts.
Helena May 27 Judge Knowles sentenced Herbert H Matteson the Great Falls First National Bank cashier to the maximum 10 years in Deer Lodge state prison for making a false bank report to the comptroller of the currency. If rules followed he will serve about seven years.
A temporary Fifth Avenue sidewalk gave way near Eighteenth Street during a Rochambeau mission parade, killing Elvin L. Collidge and injuring about 100 others. Police arrested several contractors as rescue crews evacuated victims and treated injuries, with coroner noting insufficiently strong construction.
In Lewistown May 27 Guy White six dies after consuming water parsnip root found by boys on Boyd creek. Brothers Harry White and cousin Roy Brooks narrowly survive with early medical aid and antidotes. Bozeman experts identified plant as deadly water parsnip.
Sam Kelley was in Fort Benton on Sunday and started the circle round-up from the narrow gauge crossing of the Teton yesterday. The present weather is favorable.

Chicago's beef supply from the stock yards has nearly vanished amid a strike. Pack ers, wholesale, and retail butchers are restricted from moving meat, prompting talk of shop closings for a week or more to back the teamsters. Some unions may join if the dispute lasts.
Roy Honey, about 17, was arrested in Billings on a $10 theft charge. Police tried to hand him to county authorities, but he slipped away from a janitor as he was being taken to jail and remains at large.
Denver May 27 The Western Labor union convention adopted the credentials report seating 76 delegates. President McDonald urged labor unity, anti cheap oriental labor, eight hour laws, and fought trusts while calling for a labor press and irrigation support. The secretary reported substantial growth with 157 local unions and 45 district unions, and debated expanding the labor movement beyond the AFL.
At the Ohio Republican state convention in Cleveland on May 27 Senator Hanna's supporters claim overwhelming district success and unity. Delegates await his keynote response tomorrow while General Grosvenor presides and a new state central committee is formed amid Cuban reciprocity debates.
Denver May 27 165 delegates attended the Western Federation of Miners annual convention. President Edward Boyce urged union political participation and called for socialist principles while denouncing smelter lead copper and steel trusts tied to Standard Oil. He said he would not seek re election.
Deputy sheriffs searched tonight for Charles F. Kelly, former speaker of the house of delegates, on a bench warrant after a grand jury alleged he obtained city printing contracts through fictitious firms in violation of city ordinance prohibiting contracts with city office holders or their interests.

Washington May 27 The House passed the Shattuc immigration bill amid a heated vote on prohibiting liquor sales at immigrant stations. An amendment by Mr. Bowersock to ban all intoxicants there was adopted 88 to 18, and a later provision to ban liquor in the Capitol itself passed 108 to 19, with debate over beer versus stronger drinks and remarks on administration and library committee conduct. The measure also tightens head tax, expands excluded classes, and adds reading requirements for older aliens. The House then moved to other business with adjournment at 4 58 p m.
A stampede from Deer Trail camp to a ledge on the Spokane reservation near Sand Creek six miles east sparked by rumors of open settlement. Fifteen to twenty Deer Trail mine workers rode to claim a promising mineral vein with assays up to 200 ounces of silver per ton. Seven locations now cover the mile long ledge, and it remains unclear if authorities have removed the intruders.
