On a 10 mile front the Italian army smashed the Austrian line and seized positions from Castagnavizza at the Gulf of Triest. British batteries aided with heavy guns as Austrian prisoners, including officers, were taken. The advance nears Triest, while Austria launches reprisals and German and Russian fronts show activity.
Washington May 24 The Prince of Udine and other members of the alien war mission were guests of President Wilton at a White House state dinner. The visit closes a day of honors similar to those given to British and French counterparts as they prepare to negotiate with American officials next month.
New York reports that a lengthy strike by oil field workers at Tampico and nearby areas, involving several thousand men, has ended. The strikers won their demand for higher pay, according to information received by companies involved.

Washington May 24 The present first class at the Naval Academy will be graduated June 28 next a year ahead of their time in order to provide additional officers for the fleet of submarine chasers.
Weather outlook for Washington and Montana shows rain on a day and Friday with generally fair skies thereafter. Temperatures rise in the west and central portions as the system moves through.
Dr Arthur Warren Waite a Grand Rapids dentist was executed for poisoning his wealthy father in law John K Peck. The swift 1916 sentencing followed his confession and a noted absence of passion or motive beyond money. The execution used the death chair after three shocks.
Judge Bourquin and attorney W B Rodgers spoke to a large Butte audience under Grand Army auspices praising American resolve in World War I. The address framed democracy vs autocracy, urged support for government actions, and invoked history to justify national sacrifice.
