Aviator Potter Killed in Fight Over North Sea

Washington May 22 news of the death of Ensign Stephen Potter naval reserve who was killed while fighting seven enemy single seated airplanes for the North Sea on April 23 was received from London. Potter had been second pilot to a British royal flying boat and had shot a German beyond Heligoland Bight.

Follette Attorney Praises Senator In Washington Hearing

Washington May 22. Counsel for Senator La Follette closed today after two days of argument before the senate privileges and elections committee. They urged dismissal of charges tied to a St Paul speech last September and defended the senator as honest even among public critics. The attorney said the St Paul address was factual and that newspaper misrepresentation fueled the controversy. Two weeks were set for a supplementary brief. It was not clear if the committee will take further action.

Copper price plea to raise to thirty cents a pound

Washington May 22 Representatives from the copper industry urged the war industries board price-fixing committee to lift the government price from 23 1/2 cents to 30 cents per pound for three months beginning June 1. In Silver Row county Sheriff John F Melia and Deputies Avelaid Quigley were dismissed after a raid on the Sunrise saloon. John K O'Rourke says Melia exceeded authority during the raid and a split in his staff followed. Under Sheriff Whalen, a longtime ally, was appointed by O'Rourke.
