The New York Presbyterian general assembly adopted the creed revision report with little debate. The changes, aimed at clarifying the confession, now go to presbyteries for ratification. The session heard arguments for and against revision and closed with praise and a devotional service.
Herbert H. Matteson, former cashier of the First National Bank of Great Falls, indicted on about 90 counts for embezzlement and false reports. The scheme allegedly involved roughly $238 000 drawn over 1899 to 1901, with bail set at $20 000.
French guests arrive in Washington to be received with honors. The visit marks a ceremonial welcome emphasizing diplomacy and ongoing relations between France and the United States.

Chicago May 22 Two hundred reading furniture manufacturers joined in Chicago for the national association meeting and formed a combine to control output and regulate prices. Capital about 25 million dollars. A new price schedule went into effect immediately. The group includes about 85 percent of U S furniture makers and denies being a trust, calling it a pool of furniture interests.
Dallas Texas May 22 Morning session of the general conference of the M E church South adopted the compromise war claim paper with minor revisions and began bishop elections. Dr E B Haas was chosen on the first ballot and A Cokesmith of Virginia on the fourth. A $5 000 000 endowment fund proposal to aid superannuated preachers and widows was adopted with no material change.
In Boston on May 22 a kosher meat disturbance in the West End saw 300 Hebrews assault three markets. Windows smashed, stock ruined, ringleaders arrested, including two women and a man. A customer and a woman injured amid the crowd rush.
A confession in a district court case from Alliance Nebraska reveals Gus Jahnke and Oliver Oleson killed Michael Sierk by shooting him in the back at his breakfast table. Oleson says they had first tried to poison and drown him. Jahnke was named as beneficiary on Sierk's life policy. Authorities faced lynch threats. prisoners were moved to York County then returned for trial.
Nesbet Rochester, deputy state treasurer, received a telegram from his brother John Rochester noting their father, long ill at Bowling Green Kentucky, is much worse. Because of his age, death is feared. The Rochester brothers are well known in Butte.
Charles Hay a Chinaman was found dead in a filthy cabin at 510 West Main Street Helena May 22. The body lay in a bunk amid opium gear as neighbors and police investigated the death while undertakers awaited coroner authorization.
B F Maguire released after case of obtaining $40 from Carrie Kenney on false pretenses was settled out of court to the satisfaction of Mrs Kenney.
Will Jones, Joplin man accused of criminal assault on Mrs. Parmeter, was removed from Webb City jail to Carthage by a sheriff and deputies to avert lynching. A woman failed to positively identify Jones among three prisoners, while two farmers and two boys later identified him as the attacker. No mob danger remains.
