A man supplied with dynamite cartridges planned to throw them as the royal procession passed. Authorities report multiple arrests of prominent anarchists in connection with the plot.
In Madrid on May 18 six men including Gabriel Lopez an insurance company employee were arrested after dynamite cartridges were found. Lopez says he received cartridges to throw during the royal procession. Nine cartridges seized and analyzed. arrests include six medical students a printer a carpenter and a mason. Francisco Suraez linked to Lopez. Suraez denied involvement as other arrests followed.
Ninety people are dead and 129 injured after a swift cyclone blasted Goliad Texas around 3 45 pm. A relief train from Victoria and another from Cuero brought doctors nurses and volunteers as searchers tally the dead including many named victims and scores more injured among collapsed homes and churches.
A Texas cyclone swept inland from the Gulf coast near Goliad and traveled northeast to Kentucky, killing and injuring many. Goliad faced the worst damage with reports of 50 to 200 deaths and extensive destruction including churches and homes.救
The Dallas Methodist Episcopal conference reports slower results this week but expects key decisions next week. War claim discussion heated the mood, with a vote set for Tuesday to push toward settlement. Resolutions approved for clergy education and a Vanderbilt related correspondence school. International delegates from Britain and Canada were welcomed kindly. After the claim is resolved, the deaconess order and bishop elections will be addressed.
Special Dispatch reports Helena May 18 Captain George of the 16th U S I will succeed Captain Charles Gerhart as commandant at Fort Harrison arriving at the post yesterday. He will assume charge when troops move and turnover is completed, expected around June 1 after arriving from Fort Wright Spokane.
Havana May 18 General Wood refused Rathbone counsel request to retain witnesses and records for a potential new trial under amended criminal procedure rules. The move would allow new evidence but critics say it alters future trials by effectively granting extra opportunities to present evidence. Bristow and other officials remain under service orders, with Bristow to sail home tomorrow.
The Times correspondent reports Souffriere in St Vincent is quiet as of May 18 while the Martinique volcano remains highly active. A new eruption is said to have begun north of Mt Pelee.
In Helena on May 18 plans were discussed to celebrate Memorial Day jointly by Wadsworth post G A R N B Forrest camp Confederate Veterans and ex Span ker American soldiers. A committee meeting led by F P Sterling Dr C B Miller R C Wallace and others reviewed arrangements.
A violent wind and rainstorm hit San Antonio on May 18 causing property damage estimated at 50 000 to 75 000 dollars. Fort Sam Houston suffered 20 000 dollars in damage while West End church was destroyed. Hartwell's hotel St. Louis college and the Academy of the Lady of the Sacred Heart reported damages of 3 000 6 000 and 2 000 dollars respectively. Private residences may total at least 20 000 dollars and several people were injured with no deaths reported.
May 18 reports say western outskirts of Austin Texas were hit hard by strong winds. Walters Park fourteen miles northwest suffered extensive damage with around sixty houses blown over and many trees uprooted. In Austin several homes were unrooted and the state institute for the blind sustained damage though no injuries occurred among inmates. River camping parties suffered property losses but no fatalities were reported.
A Texas cyclone hit Goliad at 345 PM causing widespread destruction across the western city. A special train brought doctors nurses and relatives to the scene as ambulances ferried the injured past the ruined blocks between Church and Patrice streets.
The big Texas storm caused all wires to Shreveport and Texarkana to go down though no loss of life is reported. A driving rain and strong wind hit Dallas about 2 PM with no further damage noted.
A morning wind storm and rain hit Mineola Texas at about 5 o clock. Hundreds of shade trees were uprooted and damaged roofs and buildings. Several houses were blown from their foundations and stores suffered roof damage with heavy stock losses. No loss of life reported.
The Etonia arrived from the river Platte via St. Lucia recounting a voyage with the British steamer Roddam, which survived a volcanic eruption at Martinique. Crew faced burning dust, wrecked decks, and a chaotic escape as Roddam fought fire, embarked with 18 dead, and reached St Lucia for aid.
A May 17 dispatch reports Mt Pelee eruptions intensifying with 15 violent detonations and lightning lighting the island. New craters form near Le Precheur as refugees begin returning home despite danger.
In Paris, high mass and funeral psalms were said for Martinique disaster victims. Bishop Cormont will lead a special service at St Augustine Church and absolution will be given. Notre Dame memorial was postponed due to President Loubet's absence. Funds were raised for West Indian sufferers, including a circus in Toulouse needing 25,000 francs.
