Plume of smoke and fire columns erupt from the volcano reaching Fort de France. Authorities fear renewed destruction as lava and ash threaten nearby settlements and farmland.
Great flashes of light from Mt Pelee last night near Fort de France Martinique. Red glowing clouds and showers of cinders disrupted districts Lorrian Marrigot Sante Marie La Trinite. In St Vincent 70 dead with 1300 bodies interred and 5000 to need aid as ash covers crops and towns.
The scene of the West Indies disaster draws multiple warships and aid teams. American cruiser Cincinnati sails from Santo Domingo while Potomac cruises from San Juan, Dixie from New York yard, Sedgwick to carry clothing, Indefatigable from Trinidad, Pallas from Jamaica, Suchet and D Assas from Brest, Tage from New Orleans, and Valkyrien from St Thomas.
Special dispatch notes hundreds of men working all day to repair flood damage in Great Falls Montana with damages estimated at 3900 dollars. Floodwaters left mud clogged basements sidewalks and ruined track sections between Great Falls and Rainbow Falls.

The Rev. Dr. David Wylie moved that the report be adopted. The motion was laid on the table and Dr. Minton moved to set discussion for next Thursday at 10 30 a m.
A May 16 conference at the East Helena smelter reported a committee proposal to rehire workers at current wages and hours with no anti union discrimination. Workers would sign a one year no strike contract on wages or hours, sent to Manager Whitley and wired to New York.
In Helena on May 16 the defense for Wallace Mix of Missoula argued for a new trial in the damage case against the Northern Pacific. The court had settled a bul of exceptions, with Mix previously awarded $10,000 for injuries from a wreck at Bearmouth on Christmas 1899.
The United Mine Workers in a May convention in Hazleton Pennsylvania endorsed a plan to unite bituminous and anthracite workers in a nationwide strike risk. A special convention may be called to coordinate actions across districts potentially halting coal production and paralyzing industries.
The Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines reports the 1901 anthracite coal production in the state. Figures detail total output by mines, with breakdowns by districts and mine operations, reflecting the year's mining activity and industry scale.
A massive blaze at Armour & Co. lard refinery in Chicago's Union Stockyards destroyed the five story plant and caused extensive damage estimated up to a million dollars. Forty to fifty injuries were reported including seven near-fatal cases as workers fled the flames and a large crowd gathered on nearby viaducts to watch the blaze.
