Comma Worth Millions In Land Grant To N P
Washington May 14. How many millions of dollars a comma may be worth to the government was a question raised today by D McGowan attorney for the forest service before the congressional commission investigating land grants to the Northern Pacific Railway company. He contended that a missing comma in the original act altered the rights and mortgage status of lands and could change the value of the grant. McGowan cited a Yale letter and a Yale English department chairman to back his claim, and read a Supreme Court opinion supporting the need for grammatical clarity. Kerr counsel for the railway argued the comma issue was immaterial.
