Report says signal stations indicate a huge fire toward Fort de France raising grave fears for the town. Mt Pelee continues to erupt with lava flow ongoing, heightening danger to nearby settlements and observers.
Castries reports Mt Pelee eruption continuing as Savan arrives with news that St Pierre remains a moonscape. Relief steamer Kenneth delivers AP correspondent and rescuers assess ruins where cathedral, convent and college are gone. Debris and corpses clog streets while guards deter looters as rescue crews mobilize for months of work.
Washington May 14 The navy department this morning received a nam continuation of a report or item as the page fourteen continues the story.
A Paris dispatch reports Mt Vesuvius showing activity with lava flow from the Pompeii side and intermittent hot cinders. Naples counters the Paris claim as unsubstantiated noting Vesuvius has a long history of eruptions but no recent overwhelming eruption is confirmed.
Hazleton Pa May 14 delegates to the anthracite mine workers convention held two sessions in the opera house but adjourned without deciding on a permanent strike. About 700 delegates attended behind closed doors with no official action given. President Mitchell led the meeting and said concessions from operators were unlikely while signaling possible guidance to delegates if needed.
In Washington on May U4 a lock-out of about 2400 building trades workers began after a dispute over employing non-union plumbers in city construction. The action halts ongoing work as unions push for job protections.
Structural iron workers of the American Bridge Works reach a compromise wage agreement in Youngstown Ohio. The 471 and a half cents per hour rate covers an eight hour day, ending a strike that demanded 47 cents an hour.
Lord Kitchener orders that Boer representatives from the Transvaal and Orange River colonies gather at Vreningining for the conference starting tomorrow. He ensures delegates reach the rendezvous unimpeded by British troops. A delegation will relay the decision to Lord Kitchener.
