Socialist Party Opens Campaign at Madison Square Garden
In New York on May 9 the Socialist Party launched its 1920 campaign at a Madison Square Garden mass meeting. Eugene V. Debs, serving a 10 year prison term in Atlanta on espionage act charges, was hailed as the party’s presidential nominee. The event, attended by about 5,000, featured The Internationale and the Marseillaise and aimed to advance the party’s call for general strike action through industrial action. Authorities guarded against anti radical demonstrations and operatives from IWW and communist sympathizers were kept from the venue. Debs was proclaimed the nominee by Morris Hillquit who criticized Washington and both major parties as radically revolutionary.

Anaconda Propagation Work Delayed at Stuart Mills Hatchery
Severe winter weather has delayed propagation work at Stuart Mills spring hatchery near Georgetown Lake. Dr. I. T. Treece, in charge, said native trout did not begin running until April 22, the latest on record. Most of the run appears over, yet a late run is unlikely. The station is now at capacity with 1,500,000 spawn in incubation, and future spawning will be moved to Washoe park hatchery. Open water near the bay mouth is forming but lies inside the dead line where fishing is prohibited.
