No renewed fighting reported yesterday at Tsinian.
Cadsoe Norway May 5. The Italia dirigible commanded by Gen. Umberto Nobile departed at 8 30 tonight for Spitzbergen to serve as base during a series of Arctic flights. The craft, which arrived from Stolp Germany after a Milan Stolp leg, will explore unvisited Arctic regions and revisit the North Pole later in its polar program.
Tom Morgan of the Sixth ward was renominated as president by the Democratic aldermen caucus in Butte. No other business was transacted. The council, split with 12 Democrats and 5 Republicans, anticipated a vice presidency selection as in prior years.
Moscow reports twenty two children drowned when a boat carrying them down the Kuban river capsized. Twelve bodies have been recovered as the Kuban rises in the Caucasus and flows toward the sea of Azov.
The board of tax appeals today settled the 55 million Ford stock tax case in favor of nine former minority stockholders. It fixes stock value at 10 000 a share for 1913 to 1919, denying the Treasury commissioner’s right to reopen the case except for gross errors. Bast, first foreign bishop tried by the church, faces charges rooted in 1925 Denmark charity fund misapplication. The trial, begun last night, may last two weeks with a verdict due at the quadrennial conference.
A new Senate committee to monitor campaign funds was formed and will begin hearings this week. Appointed by Vice President Dawes after a resolution from Senate Democratic leader Joseph T. Robinson, the panel includes Republicans Frederick Steiner, W. H. McMaster, Porter H. Dale, and Democrats Alben W. Barkley and Sam G. Bratton. The group can summon witnesses and conduct investigations.
Silver Bow county will hold both Democratic and Republican county conventions Tuesday May 8 at 8 p.m. in separate courtrooms to elect 11 delegates and 11 alternates to the state convention in Helena on May 15. Officials include A. J. Stewart and William Meyer for Republicans and William J. Walsh and Carl Engel for Democrats.
