Internal troubles widen as Emperor Charles ends parliamentary session. Loyalists rally as campaign addresses in Washoe draw large audiences.
A Washoe County gathering featured patriotic speeches by C Gara of Anaconda and John G Crown of Helena. The War Chest plan aimed to replace multiple fundraisers with a single community drive to support Red Cross and war efforts, detailing collection costs and salaries funded by the drive.
Washington reports protracted debate over a sedition bill to punish disloyal nets and utterances with years in prison and fines. The measure, started a year ago, passed the house committee 48 to 10 and is expected to reach a full vote next week with several Democratic senators opposing its adoption. The Washington press notes opposition and references to newspaper suspensions amid wartime conditions.
Chicago officials report that one-third of passenger trains between Chicago and the Pacific will be eliminated after June 1. The move aims to save about 12 million dollars yearly and trims 11 728 000 miles of service. Through routes to Los Angeles San Francisco Seattle Portland will be realigned under four lines. Three Chicago to Los Angeles through trains and several others to San Francisco Seattle and Portland will be dropped along with over 40 local services.

Treasury announced the campaign a sweeping success with pledges totaling about 3.2 billion dollars and potential to near 4 billion. London May 4 an emissary of peace is in England as part of a new German peace offensive, reportedly a Dutch financier with another agent en route. British leaders pledge to see the war through while draft quotas are issued nationwide. Provost General Crowder orders troops from the Northwest to Camp Lewis Washington. Minnesota 414.
