Sixty five survivors of the Tokuyo Maru wreck reached Seattle aboard the Buford. The Japanese freighter burned off Cape Mears, Ore, and sank during the day after seven crewmen leaped into the sea. One death confirmed, Kishimoto of Tokuyo Maru died in a lifeboat en route to the Buford.
Washington May 3 Twenty million acres of arid lands in the West would be reclaimed under the McNary Bill to fund homestead projects via federal aid. E F Blaine of Seattle testified before the senate irrigation committee that a 250 million fund would back loans to reclamation associations. Former service men would get preference for reclaimed lands with 80 acre farms, about 400 000 farms created for some 290 000 veterans. In New York the body of Mrs Annette K Rankine wealthy widow who vanished April T was found in New York harbor near South Brooklyn.more

The Harding administration indicated interest in economic adjustments from the war but avoided political involvement in Europe. An ultimatum to Germany was being drafted, with the total payment set at about 6.75 billion pounds including Belgian debts.
Lord Northcliffe told American dry goods visitors in London that misunderstandings between England and the United States stem largely from pinpricks in the American press and could be cleared up through frankness. New York May 3 A 20 percent wage cut for day labor with equitable adjustments for salaries will take effect May 16 across United States Steel plants. About 115 000 to 190 000 workers may be affected. Gary cited efforts to end the 12 hour day, already reduced in some departments, aiming for full elimination soon. In 1920 the average daily wage was 6.96 dollars while total salaries and wages reached 581 556 028 with 267 000 employees.
