The House rejected the relief measure by 141 to 120 amid the most heated debate in years as representatives voiced strong objections and concern over the proposed fee. A party divide and urgent rhetoric framed a dramatic policy clash.
The House voted 141 to 120 against the equalization fee provisions of the McNary-Haugen farm relief bill triggering a heated dispute over what had been approved. Louisiana Democrat Aswell offered a substitute bill omitting the fee and intended to replace sections of the original measure. Continued on Page 6.
The national shrine convention in Miami concluded most business as Clyde I. Webster of Detroit was elected imperial outer guard the only contested post. Frank C. Jones of Arabia Temple Houston was chosen imperial potentate, while Webster will become potentate in 1942. Other officers advance automatically as the three day event closes with festive events.
Readiness announced for the air mail line between Great Falls and Salt Lake via Butte. Felix Steinle the transportation chief says operations will begin, after consultations with James H. Rowe of the board. They inspected the south of Butte where the company plans an airport.
The Rev. E. J. Groeneveld celebrated 40 years as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Butte with a May 2 anniversary service. More than 400 parishioners attended a reception, musical program, and buffet luncheon after the greeting by Rev. Edward Smith. Groeneveld began ministry 46 years ago after Princeton, journeying from Deer Lodge to Butte.
In a telegraph to Wilbur Legette, Josephus Daniels pledges support for Houston convention nominees and prohibition enforcement. He rejects a third party ticket and warns that enough prohibition Democrats can keep laws strong. Los Angeles dispatch notes Smith’s California primary win boosts Houston convention momentum.
The Bremen crew, Baron von Huenefeld, Capt. Herman Koehl, and Maj. Jaynes Fitzmaurice, received the Distinguished Flying Cross from President Coolidge in Washington. Kellogg and Lindbergh welcomed them at Bolling Field, then they lunched at the White House and laid wreaths at Arlington.
London reports the Anglo Egyptian crisis ends as orders for the British fleet to Alexandria are countermanded. Egypt delays on the public assemblies bill, which would permit gatherings without police interference, after Britain demanded its withdrawal and set a three day ultimatum to Nahas Pasha.
Colonel Charles Lindbergh, who crossed the Atlantic solo a year ago, has a navigation instructor. Lieut. Commander P. W. H. Weems of the navy has arrived in Washington and is listed in the officers' register with duty “to teach Colonel Charles Lindbergh navigation.”
The quadrennial general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church voted 10 to 1 against appointing a 15 member committee to study modernistic theories. Rev Harold Paul Sloan of Haddonfield had urged the move as a fundamentalist measure amid broader church debates.
The Beautify Butte drive opens with nearly 100 local business and professional men pledging to improve the town. The campaign aims to boost civic pride, attract outsiders, and spur new business while funding none of its own. an advertising push in the Standard launches the effort.
Gen Umberto Nobile launches the dirigible Italia from Stolp Germany for a 1700 mile overland dash to Spitzbergen in a bid to cross the North Pole at 62 miles per hour. Cavalrymen assist as dawn nears and Citta Di Milano supply ship arrives to aid the expedition.
Captain George H. Wilkins and Lieut. Carl B. Elefson, icebound at Green Harbor Spitzbergen, prepare to sail for Norway aboard the Inger Elizabeth May 15. Wilkins hopes to depart ice for the steamer Hobby in five to six days. Elefson may join the flight. Wilkins writes a book titled My Polar Flights.
James W. Uncles, current finance officer, was nominated and named commander of Silver Bow post No. 1 American Legion at a Butte meeting. He will replace Oscar Dingman, who yielded strong results in his year as leader. Nominations for other officers were made with multiple candidates for vice commander and finance officer. The meeting discussed ex servicemen preference law and possible consolidation with the veterans league.
