Governor Dixon faced charges of vote delivery as special committees reported findings. The extraordinary session of the Seventeenth legislative assembly adjourned sine die at 1:30 this morning after hours of bill enrollment and signing.
Plans by W Wellington Smith for a new Jefferson school one block south of the current site at Gallatin and Shields were approved. The three story fireproof building at about 125600 is designed for future annexes and includes nine classrooms a kindergarten and modern facilities. Indirectly the article notes bond issues for funding and election on April 2.
The Montana senate investigates governor Dixon’s charge of vote trading finds no substantiation. Majority report passed printing 1,000 copies for statewide distribution. minority report expelled. Attorney General Ran kin concurs no evidence of bribery. roll calls 26 to 15 and 27 to 14.
Camden March 22 The superdreadnought Colorado was launched at the Camden NY Shipbuilding plant beside her sister ship Washington. Theodore Roosevelt Samuel D Nicholson and Patrick H Kelley spoke against disarmament praising the navy. Dozens of officers and leaders attended the luncheon after the ceremony. Roosevelt defended battle cruisers and urged strong naval power.
In Chicago on March 22 the railroad labor board heard charges that the Pennsylvania railroad favored the open shop and kept a spy system. W. W. Atterbury denied unions’ push for the closed shop and argued for minority voice, while Frank P. Walsh alleged spy networks and a large 1914 expenditure as part of labor trouble management.
President Harding issued a formal call for an extra session of Congress to meet April 11 to receive communications from the executive. The tariff and taxation are expected to be emphasized, with a proposal for a general commission to dispose of wartime government property. Foreign relations may or may not be addressed.
In Helena on March 22, five of the state’s largest dailies represented by Lafollette Moon Rariden Richards and Moses denied Gov Joseph M Dixon’s claim that Helena news reports came from a single central source. They demanded the governor name the source and condemned vague references to corporate interests.
Helena March 22 Special Dispatch to the Standard reports the Montana state central committee will meet to oust O. H. P. Shelley the republican national committeeman under the Kirton bill empowering the committee to name the chairman Shelley entered via Shelleygate A. B. C. delegates and succeeded T. A. Marlow. Open question who will take the post.
Grover C. Bergdoll, a deserter from the American army, testified in the trial of Carl Neuf and Franz Zimmer in Baden Mosbach. He described Zimmer aiming a revolver, a first shot killing a young woman Lina Butt, and a second hitting another person. Neaf recounted his detective work for U S forces at Coblenz and efforts with German authorities to apprehend deserters while pursuing Bergdoll’s case.
A brief item notes a letter from the Legion in Washington dated March 22 requesting action by the war department with continuation indicated on page 3 column 3.
Baltimore March 22 doctors said Cardinal Gibbons illness took an unfavorable turn though no immediate danger was seen. Apostolic delegate Mer John Bonzano visited the cardinal as his heart action weakened and temperature dropped to a serious level. The 87 year old church leader had a physical breakdown last fall from heavy diocesan strain and stayed with friends in Carroll county for rest since December.
The Russian Soviet government appeals to President Harding and the United States to resume trade relations. A delegation may be sent to negotiate a trade agreement as Moscow urges immediate resumption, calling for better ties and noting the hostility of the prior administration. The message stresses mutual benefits and urges removing the wall between the two nations.
