The wife of Walbridge, then believed to be his spouse, cannot attend the hearing. When she appears, spectators will be restricted to a limited number allowed in the courtroom.
Citizens flocked to the district courtroom as Mrs. George Melville was expected to testify about the murder of Walbridge on April 30 1900. Illness postponed the examination and spectators were barred during her appearance. The day featured testimonies from McDonald Cooper Grotevant and Corle detailing horses locations and alleged relations, aiming to establish motive.
In St Petersburg on March 17 18 demonstrators urged police to handle crowds while avoiding military force. Incendiary literature circulated from street cars as police fought below and a radical leaflet attacked autocracy and demanded personal freedom and representation. Maxim Gorki’s honorary academy member bid sparks debate.
A late night fire on the Hoboken riverfront destroyed the Phoenix Steamship pier and the British Queen, causing extensive damage to lighters and dock facilities. Losses reach about 1 million with several longshoremen burned and a number of Chinese crewmen detained for safety. The blaze spread to Barber line docks and a Hongkong steamer, Heathburn, with 32 Chinese crewmen. Firefighting involved Hoboken Jersey City and New York units. the British Queen was towed clear as three burning lighters drifted away.
In New York March 18 the Morse suit against the Montana Ore Purchasing Co proceeds with witness testimony. EF Morse denies stockholding in Amalgamated Copper, cites Montana rumor that neighboring mines supplied ore, and notes debate over Butte Boston and New York company activities before adjournment to Monday.
Seattle police arrested Andy Norris on March 18 on charges of being a fugitive from justice from Illinois. The arrest followed telegram descriptions from the detective bureau.
Telegraphs from Queen Alexandra King Edward VII Lord Kitchener and Lord Rosebery report concern over Cecil Rhodes illness in Cape Town. Rhodes grew weaker after a quiet sleep and required increased oxygen as doctors monitor his condition.
Cleveland spent his sixth birthday at home on Bayard Lane in Princeton with his wife and children. He spoke of the Isthmian canal, criticized Henry Watterson’s letter about Washington, and noted the Republican party may be mixed but can still unite when needed.
The chamber of deputies adopted a government-supported resolution extending future legislators' terms from four to six years. The debate grew very lively and at one point the president threatened to suspend the session.
The letter from Deer Lodge to Governor Toole presents Clinton Dotson's plea for clemency. He asserts he did not murder Eugene Cullinane or his father Oliver Dotson and accuses Oliver Benson, Ellis Persinger, James McArthur, and Berry of involvement or prior plots. He details alibi attempts and a prison conspiracy plan, then begins the narrative of events from June 18 and up to October 1899, ending as the narrative continues on Page Two.
