Former Illinois governor John P Altgeld dies after a sudden attack that followed his speech in Joliet in behalf of the Boers and their cause.
Former Illinois governor John Peter Altgeld died in Joliet at 7:09 AM after a cerebral hemorrhage following a Boer argument at a Joliet theater. Friends and physicians urged quiet to avoid alarm to his wife. his body to Chicago for burial. Altgeld, born in Germany in 1847, served as Cook County judge and Illinois governor, famed for pardons and antiwar stances.
The Senate committee on isthmian canals voted 7 to 4 to report the Hepburn bill for building a canal via the Nicaraguan route. The measure would authorize war department supervised surveys, grant perpetual right of way, and authorize $10 million to begin construction from Costa Rica to Nicaragua.
Lieut Governor Norheatz announces Altgeld death born 1847 in Prussia. He came to the U S as a child and served in the Civil War. He became a lawyer and judge and was praised for his courage and convictions. Half mast displays ordered and state business suspended during his funeral.

Tom Harney a bachelor ranchman from Roberts, north of Red Lodge, was brought to the city and examined for sanity. He was adjudged insane and ordered committed to the state asylum. His past confinement includes three asylums and a 18 month stay at Warm Springs, with attacks linked to excessive drinking.
Helena March 12 The first public sale of state lands this year will be held at Bozeman on April 8. About 50 000 acres will be offered for sale with valuable parcels expected to attract good prices for the state.
Mattie Bennett confessed she led a mixed gang that drugged beaten and robbed men in a Beaumont house. Victims were dumped in the river or left injured to be found. Five bodies have been recovered this year and more than a dozen disappearances are feared linked to the group.
