Atlantic Fleet Not in Readiness Senate Testimony

Rear Admiral Sims testified before the senate investigating committee that the Atlantic fleet was not kept ready for battle in World War I. He cited delays dispatching four battleships to join the British grand fleet, mixed ship types, and dock delays that postponed action by two to three weeks. He said requests to reinforce allied patrols were initially refused to avoid jeopardizing the main fighting fleet. The report references oil industry observers and local wartime recruiting efforts in Winnett, including a visit by Ermentrude the war tank and Capt. K E D Gunning with Army recruiting shows benefiting the local American Legion posts.

Houston warned a 2.5 billion bond issue might disaster if adopted under current compensation plans while Leffingwell said issuing bonds to veterans could lead most to cash holdings immediately.
