Reports describe the greatest battle of modern times in the Mukden area as czarist and Japanese armies clash for mastery. Communications indicate Japanese forces are gaining ground with more positions captured, though the outcome remains undetermined.
Dispatches from Newchwang and Sakhetan on March 6 describe 30,000 Japanese forces entrenched five miles west of Mukden with hand to hand fighting through daylight. Reports say Russian centers are retreating, with Japanese gains including 15 captured guns and multiple counterattacks failing. Russian losses cited around 3,000 to 500 for Japanese, while Kuropatkin's forces halt further advance north of Machiapu as scouts move toward Tie pass.
Newehwang March 6 There is indication the Japanese movement to envelop Mukden has met with overwhelming success and the Russian fortress may fall like Sedan. In recent days fortified centers are quiet as the Japanese center holds while wings extend northward to encircle Russian flanks and threaten the railroad.
Important captures by the Japanese army moving toward Mukden report that Onshiniv and Tachucannu were taken by the right wing near the railroad 12 miles south of Mukden. The Russian center retreated to Tinchalun station, while fire from their stores and a retreat are noted. The left flank closes on Mukden with a general attack expected within hours.
St Petersburg report says General Kuropatkin launched a blow at Field Marshal Oyama's left center just east of the railroad. Fighting is desperate along the front. Kuropatkin's casualties reach about 23 500. Oyama's around 30 000. Japanese forces reportedly exhausted and some of Nogi's troops short of food.
Tokyo reports four strategic gains in the Shakhe river region as detachments seize Pinnipuao west of Waitao mountain and capture redoubts near Housapheaozu. Forces push toward Wanpao and Suchiatun stations as Suchiatun burning marks rail activity built by Russians toward Subupao.
St. Petersburg reports March 6 that the greatest battle of modern times is to be decided today or tomorrow. The two massive armies clash with Kuropatkin reportedly preparing to retreat and shift stores northward. Military experts deem one side doomed, while a breakthrough remains possible for Kuropatkin as the lines tighten.
Field Marshal Oyama tightens the noose around Kuropatkin near Mukden with a rapid turning attack from the west aided by Nogi’s forces. The war office notes Chinese neutrality was violated and that Japanese lines stretch about 60 miles while Kuropatkin concentrates to meet the onslaught.
More than half the workmen of St. Petersburg are out on strike again today. The Schlid ovski mixed commission has been paralyzed by the men’s refusal to participate with employer representatives, and Schlidovski has practically discontinued efforts to settle issues on the projected basis.
Report from Aden on March 6 states a Russian warship patrols the Red sea center and has been turning its searchlights on passing vessels.
In Mukden report on March 5 Russians assault east of Poutiloff hill and take roughly 100 Japanese prisoners. Japanese counterattacks near Kandalisan and Gaotu pass were repulsed. fiercest fighting centered on the right wing from Machiapu.
Honolulu reports a coroner's inquest finding that autopsy evidence points to strychnine poisoning as the cause of Mrs. Stanford's death. Physicians say organs showed no disease. witnesses include Beverley, Miss Richmond, and Grace Galmore, who suspects murder but names no suspect.
Miss Bertha Berner, Mrs. Stanford's longtime secretary, testified at the Moana hotel in Honolulu that California officials advised her employer to leave San Francisco after an apparent poisoning attempt. She described leaving a glass with mineral water, bicarbonate of soda, and a laxative tablet for Mrs. Stanford before the secretary retired for the night.
Albert Beverley former butler and Miss Richmond former maid of the Stanford household were escorted to Captain Burnett’s office by Detective Cleary. The closed conference involved Burnett Wren Boyington and Mountford Wilson. Officials offered no details on the questioning or its focus.
In St Paul on March 6 the United States filed suit against the General Paper company and 28 codefendants in the paper trust case. The Rhine land Paper company and Manufacturers' Paper company of New York also filed defenses. The General Paper company denies broad authority to set prices or restrain output and claims contracts require mill approval. The suit alleges restraint of interstate trade and commerce, which the defendants dispute.
In Denver on March 6 the Colorado general assembly heard attorney arguments for Governor Alva Adams in his bid to keep the office against James H. Peabody. They will close tomorrow and then review committee reports with each member limited to ten minutes, aiming for a decision later this week. Milton Smith and Samuel W. Belford spoke for Adams.
Governor Toole vetoed the railway commission bill amid five objections, arguing appointment should be by the people or rejected, and criticizing the plan for interim appointments and broad indebtedness. He also vetoed a fusion-prevention bill but approved Walt's primary election law.
Former United States Senator Edward O Wolcott died in Monte Carlo March 1 and was cremated today at Pere la Chaise in Paris. Ambassador Porter, Henry Wolcott and intimate friends attended. The Rev Dr Goodrich officiated. Ashes to be sent to America on the steamer St Louis leaving Cherbourg March 11.
London reports Premier Balfour announced in the house of commons that Mr. Wyndham has resigned from his post as Chief Secretary for Ireland on March 6.
A bribery charge is reported on the floor of the Eornorship contest, alleging improper conduct by a participant. Details remain unclear as investigators review the incident and related testimonies.
The Colorado legislature forms a committee to probe bribery charges in the 1905 governorship race. James M. Herbert, Colorado Southern president, and Daniel Sullivan Cripple Creek postmaster, are accused of offering $1500 to influence votes for Alva Adams against James Peabody. The Senate reading of R. W. White House reassignments include Reid succeeding Choate as ambassador to Great Britain. Senate session opens with Fairbanks presiding as new senators welcomed and executive session held.

Devlin as U S attorney for the northern district of California and ex Senator Joseph V Quarles as U S district judge for the eastern district of Wisconsin.
