Bird of Paradise and the Downward Spiral of a Comber Narrative
The blurred text sketches a grim arc of a downbeat figure described as a comber on the Pacific coast. It hints at descent through drinking, harsh acts, and predatory encounters with a native woman guiding and discarding him. The passage recurs in Dean and Tully’s sketches.
