National Foresters Plan To Boost Interest In Pine Forests

F G Clark supervisor of the Deer Lodge national forest, headquartered in Butte, returned from a three day Colorado convention in Denver. The meeting discussed lodgepole pine management as its main timber used in Montana mine construction. Clark noted the forest service supplies about 80 percent of timber for mining needs and the convention urged renewed interest in forestry and grazing terms. In Deer Lodge, about 17 000 cattle and 60 000 sheep are spread among 200 to 400 owners, indicating stock raisers own much of the cattle and sheep. Clark questions why Montana shows little interest in paper manufacture despite abundant timber. Federal forest officers promised assistance to promote the timber industry.
