Helena March 1 Unanimously amended Junod highway measure to create a three member commission replacing a senate single man plan. House also defeated Rodgers truth in fabric measure and approved liquor prescription bill amid a busy field day with seven calls and an appeal from the chair.
In Helena on March 1 the liquor prescription measure under the Volstead act, Senate Bill 289, swung through a dramatic sequence of killings and revivals. After initial defeat by six votes it was saved by four votes, revived on third reading, and passed 50 to 45. The bill now goes to the governor for approval amid further debate and a related tariff note and highway commission amendments.
Butte enjoyed an unusually mild February with temperatures from 34 to 47 degrees and six inches of snow. The mean max reached 42.6 while the mean min was 21.6, marking a 21 year record as weather officials noted no immediate change in conditions.
Paris and London dispatches report French officials prepared for a possible forward movement on the Rhine with Marshal Foch ready to act on instruction. German counter proposals astonish French officials and MPs, while Allied talks in Lancaster House hint negotiations may end with an ultimatum and planned measures to be announced after judicial and military advisers convene.

Butte city council met in adjourned session to consider bids for refunding bonds once offered by W L Slayton Co which courts enjoined. One bid from Bankers Trust Denver arrived but not opened. No decision made. next meeting set for March 16. Slayton may file suit over terms. Callow opposes new bids. City Attorney says no action needed.
Five black bathers died when the wing of a naval seaplane struck a Pensacola beach crowd. Several others were injured as the aircraft landed on the beach. The aviator was not injured and was detained for investigation.
President Wilson wrote to Representative Garrett denying House charges that B. M. Baruch and John D. Ryan profited from copper price fixing in World War I. He called the accusations irresponsible gossip and praised their service and patriotism in war work and wartime governance.
Special Dispatch to the Standard reports a letter from the president to Representative Garrett of Tennessee denying that Bernard Baruch and John D. Ryan influenced copper price fixing during the war. The president details the fixing method, names Judge Lovett as the committee chair, and notes a 23 1/2 cent per pound price with wage safeguards for copper workers.
A minority report in the Senate finance committee condemns the soldier bonus bill as costly and burdensome. Senator Thomas, a Democrat from Goler Fado, calls the measure "outrageous" and “mercenary,” arguing it would cost about three and a half billion dollars and depress Liberty bonds, threatening taxpayers with a heavy load. He lauds the army segment while opposing further compensation.
Secretary Payne told a Senate committee that the Walsh bill to allow using Yellowstone Park flood waters for irrigation in Montana can be reconsidered. Hearings were postponed as federal administration reviews the issue before Congress adjourns.
