Shaft Breaks At St. Lawrence Mine Halts Hoisting Three Weeks Expected
An eight inch diameter main hoist shaft at the St. Lawrence mine broke Thursday evening. The three deck cage with eight miners per deck was lowered when the break occurred. Engineers restrained the load and the men escaped to the surface. No hoisting can resume until a new shaft arrives, likely three weeks or longer, affecting many workers though ore from other mines should keep smelters running.
