Public Service Tariff Rule Violations Risk Prosecution

Unless a few public service corporations and Montana cities hasten to comply with the newly enacted public service law they are likely to face proceedings instituted by Attorney General Welly at the urging of the public services commission. They could be fined from 100 to 500 dollars per day for each day of noncompliance. In March the commission gave notice that tariffs must be filed by April 5, and while many companies sought extensions, several did not file or request extra time. The commission has reported the matter to the attorney general and will prosecute noncompliant firms and cities. The law applies to cities operating electric lighting plants as well as other public utilities.
