Investigations reveal possible police extortion schemes involving Cocchi and Mrs Grace Hamiston. Inspectors searched Kunz's carpenter shop adjoining Cocchi's, seeking clues to the Cruger murder. Mrs Hamiston suggested a tunnel from Cocchi's shop may reach a nearby building formerly run as a saloon by a woman.

Chicago June 22 In a riotous session the city Council refused to confirm Mayor Thompson's school board appointees by a 45 to 22 vote on reconsideration. The mayor had adjourned the session earlier and did not attend. Alderman John C Kennedy moved impeachment, sending the resolution to the Judiciary committee.
W H Rodgers, a representative of the federal labor department, arrived in Butte to study mine strike troubles. He checked into a hotel late and did not attend any meetings. He planned to contact strike leaders Saturday and gather facts before suggesting next steps. Rodgers formerly led miners in Iowa and did not register at the hotel.
Washington June 22 The house debate on the food control bill centers on a drive by prohibition advocates to insert a stronger dry provision before the final vote. Amendments include fixing prices of essentials and authorizing president to prescribe food and fuel for the nation and allies. The house also adopts measures to limit blanket control and to allow volunteer aid, with a new conspiracy section penalizing attempts to disrupt supply or fix prices.
Destruction by dynamite of the iron ore docks in Marquette is believed to be the plan of plotters. C. W. Timmins was arrested as one of two men seen with explosives and hidden fuses near the docks. Police guard the area amid I. W. W. immigration concerns.
Special Dispatch reports from Washington that Montana has recruited 968 men for the regular army, 129 percent of its 752- man quota.
