Joe Shannon faces another trouble case involving assault allegations at a workplace. Authorities report an incident where Shannon allegedly attacked a co-worker, triggering formal charges and an investigation by local police.
In Butte several men including W W and W L Winchester were arrested on assault charges after a streetcar confrontation with miners returning from Leonard mine. Joe Shannon Mackie McDonald and others linked to the Metal Mine Workers union were involved. Brown and Rice were struck. Brown was injured with a brick. Serbians were reportedly brought in by I W W organizers and confronted by authorities. A lunch bucket raid and further assaults were reported near Black Rock mine and on Anaconda road.
The Liberty loan drive closes on the final day with overwhelming public support. Metal workers and IWW leader Shannon face further trouble as security measures tighten. An armed American ship is reported sunk. Irish political prisoners are set for release. A major two page ad features Butte subscription to Liberty law and Anaconda items. War updates include Lord and Walker visiting Butte. Community notices span funerals, strikes, Red Cross appeals, church events, sports, and mining news.
Washington June 15 American naval gunners met their first defeat in open fight with a German submarine. The tank steamship Moreni was destroyed after a two hour running fight on June 12. Forty three crew and armed guards were saved by a passing steamer. several men died from wounds and the sea. The German commander reportedly treated the American captain with courtesy. The Moreni sailed from Newark May for Baton Rouge and Leghorn, Italy, under Captain Thomas Thompson.
In the House of Commons Bonar Law announced the government’s decision after careful consideration and ahead of the session. The release applies to all prisoners in confinement over the recent rebellion in Ireland, aiming to foster harmony for the looming convention on Ireland's future within the empire.
Washington reports Senate finance committee approved a 5 percent levy on net profits of newspaper and magazine publishers as part of the war tax bill. The move, tied to a 2 percent advertising tax and second class mail rate increases, aims to raise about 15 million dollars. A motion to reconsider by Senator Penrose followed. The panel also voted to repeal the sugar refiners drawback, generating about 19 million more dollars. The plan drew heated debate led by Senator Simmons who favored an advertising receipts levy. Secretary McAdoo praised reserve banks and urged committees to stay organized for a possible second loan under the seven billion war finance law this fall.
In Minneapolis and New York districts, Liberty loan subscriptions surged. Ninth federal reserve district estimates reach about 62 million dollars, surpassing three fourths of its 80 million quota. About 238 000 Boy Scouts aided a house to house drive, yielding nearly 9.79 million dollars from around 100 000 individuals.
Washington reports the war budget signed by President Wilson will empower the government to seize contracts and take over yards to complete 2 000 000 tons of steel shipping and begin a large fleet of standardized vessels. Major General Goethals said 3 000 000 tons might be produced next year and a half as the government accelerates construction.
