In Congress This Week Not First Class for Cable or Irrigation
Washington June 8 The House plans two days for the Pacific cable bill and three for the irrigation measure both special rules prepared. The cable project would fund an American laid line to connect insular possessions with the Pacific coast and direct treasury appropriations. Passage prospects are doubtful with opposition favoring private enterprise for the cable. The irrigation bill faces Republican opposition but its friends are hopeful. Senate agenda centers on the interoceanic canal bill with likely vote efforts on the Nicaragua route next Saturday. Senator Harris will open debate and Fairbanks will back Spooner. The southern Appalachian national park bill and Nelson’s London dock charges abolition are also on the program with Stokes and Crozier actions slated.
