Washington shows slow returns delaying a firm tally of eligible men. Officials say the 10,200,000 census estimate likely won’t be matched. About half of returns indicate exemptions, though many are married men or officeholders. Secretary Baker praises the strong, patriotic response and says individual cases will determine exemptions.
London dispatch reports Premier David Lloyd George heard the massive blasts signaling the start of the Wytschaete attack from Walton Heath. He had the hour planned and ordered a 3 am wake call on the chance of hearing the detonations along the German front, 140 to 180 miles away.

Washington June 7 The house rejected the senate report on the 3.281 billion war budget bill citing a 3 million dollar provision inserted for the purchase of the old Jamestown iron site and buildings and the construction of a naval base and training station there.
A wartime bulletin reports German line breaches at Wytschaete and Messines in Belgium as British, Canadian, and Australian forces push forward. Haig’s command claims gains north to Artois, with tanks aiding the advance. French and Italian fronts show mixed activity while American troops prepare to join.
Vondon June 7 11 25 p m British troops made a second drive and carried the Village of Oostaverne from German positions east of the village over about five miles. German casualties were very heavy. Continued on Page 4.
