Moonshiners in Freedom Effort
Habeas corpus proceedings on behalf of moonshiners convicted under the internal revenue laws are before a federal court. Two are set for hearing Monday on grounds that the Eighteenth Amendment and Prohibition void the laws of conviction. Charles Lawrence and Victor Nyland seek release from custody. Lawrence received seven months and a $500 fine plus costs, Nyland nine months and a $200 fine plus costs for possessing cash and an unregistered still. If the court rules for the applicants, many other habeas cases may follow.
