Palmer declares thl a character was attacked
The hearings of the contests featured heated debates and a visit by Homer S. Cummings, Democratic National Committee chairman. He posed with Republican chair Hays and toured the Coliseum seeking ideas for San Francisco. The committee threw out both sets of delegates from Missouri’s Fifth district and Kansas City amid sharp exchanges. Bonniwell charged that Palmer tactics in Pennsylvania amounted to character assassination, claiming Judge Bonniwell’s word is not evidence. Senator Edge of New Jersey refused further sessions, citing projected inquiry as fruitless. Keating denied preconvention activity but noted efforts to defeat certain lawmakers over the transportation act. Mrs. Funk of Illinois denied McAdoo campaign ties, while Bonniwell described a direct McAdoo ballot removal order and stickering. Allegations of liquor openness and law violations surrounded the Palmer movement, with some remarks struck as personal by the committee. Senator Pomerene pressed Bonniwell for firsthand knowledge of federal involvement.

Dent representative of the district at torney's office in Butte since FE. C. Day of Helena was named as United States attorney for the state, it was said yesterday. Headquarters of the office were located at Helena by Mr. Day, and Butte, the largest city in the state, has had no representa tive to this time. Mr. Shelton has lived in Butte for more than 20 years, and has engaged in the practice of his profession in this city for that period of time. For many years he was connected with the legal department of the Clark interests here and he also was a member of the legal staff of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad. The new assistant district attorney is one of the best known members of his profession in Butte. During the late war, although far above the age limit for enlistment, Mr. Shelton made persistent efforts to get into the military service of the country. His efforts were finally rewarded when he was permitted to enlist as a private in the quarter master corps, and for the remainder of the war he was stationed in an eastern army camp. After the armistice was signed and his contingent was demobilized Mr. Shelton returned to Butte to again take up the practice of his profession. The appointment announced yesterday is a popular one with both the legal profession and the residents of Butte generally.
