London June 3 Spencer Wilkinson reviews week in South Africa noting Roberts advances from the Vaal with French and Hamilton pushing ahead. He cites Johannesburg occupation, Pretoria approaches, and Kruger’s potential moves while stressing conflicting telegram signals and evolving British strategy.

Two highwaymen robbed three Yosemite Stage and Turnpike Co. stages two miles from Grubgulch. They took guns from troopers, collected about $150 from a passenger, and about $350 from each stage, with Major Rucker and 67 cavalry in pursuit. Professor Benjamin Ide among the passengers.
Port Townsend residents report a second message from M. Patterson, mate of the steamer Pelican, dated Oct 24 1897, saying the Pelican is about to sink and that they will abandon ship in frail boats. The Pelican departed Port Townsend Oct 12 1897 with railroad ties for the Siberian railroad and was lost 12 days later. no wreckage has been found.
Advices from Honolulu say Li Hung Chang endorsed Bow Wong adherents and hopes for reform success. Bow Wong sympathizers in China sent thousands of dollars to aid Chinese plague and fire victims in Honolulu. Long Yem Mann says Li Hung Chang backs the movement if Wong supporters protect the young emperor. Honolulu Wongs pledge to carry on at their own risk.
Riley L. Moss, who killed his wife Naomi Moss at Willamette Heights on Thursday night, shot and killed himself later the same day at the Silver State lodging house in downtown Portland. He locked himself in a toilet room, and police forced the door discovering Moss with a bullet wound to the heart.
Special Dispatch reports Helena parties secured a lease on the Helena race track and plan about 15 days of racing in August. They aim to form a company to manage the track with backing from horsemen from Denver and the coast, plus Montana riders. No racing has occurred at Helena since last time.
In the university chapel on June 2 an audience heard the annual declamation contest. Lawrence Heckler won first prize and Jay McCormick took second after a strong showing by all contestants.

The House approved the Littlefield anti trust measure 273 to 1, with only Mr Mann of Illinois voting no. A minority amendment exempting labor organizations failed 260 to 8, while others supported changes expanding enforcement and penalties under the Sherman act.
Captain J B Coghlan is admitted to a Seattle hospital from an unspecified illness described as aggravated by the grip. Attending physicians say his condition is not dangerous.
The Rosecrans departed Nome today carrying two military companies from the 7th Infantry and the first season’s shipment of War Department supplies. The vessels listed include A and K companies.
