Defense Statement of Accused Officer Harrington Trial
Dan Harrington a policeman and a saloon keeper faced a police commission for unfitness due to two convictions for keeping a saloon open after midnight. He claimed patrons forced him to serve liquor at 8 am and another time allowed a bottle for a sick baby, with deputies arresting all. He said he asked the sheriff to protect him from the men and noted his long Butte residence and clean record, while deputies testified Harrington pardoned midnight sales with money. He admitted two earlier misdemeanor findings and argued the liquor after midnight was taken by force, with testimony about clashes over enforcement and arrests pending appeal.
