Tokyo reports vast Russian losses after engagement off Tsu islands. The Russian squadron, led by Admiral Rozhestvensky, suffers heavy casualties. Japanese destroyers and torpedo boats press the pursuit through night attacks, sinking ships and enveloping the fleet.
Tokio reports Rear Admiral Voelkersam commander of the Russian battleship squadron was killed on May 27 during the battle in the conning tower of his flagship Oslabia one of the ships sunk by Japan. He had led the squadron since July and sailed from Cronstadt August 25 with vessels commanded by Admiral Rozhestvensky.
Tokyo reports the Sea of Japan engagement left 113 killed and 424 wounded among Japanese forces. The Mikasa suffered 63 casualties, with other ships listed and Commander Togo wounded aboard Adzuma.
Official dispatches reach the emperor and Grand Duke Alexis detailing the cruiser Izumrud’s destruction. Baron Ferzen, Izumrud’s captain, telegrams from June 1 that he detonated the ship at the entrance to Vladimir bay after the naval engagement.
A Pennsylvania passenger train from St. Louis struck an oil wagon at Stillwater junction in Dayton Ohio. The oil tank burst and ignited, burning to death Engineer Edward Gimby and Fireman Charles Pryor of Columbus. The wagon driver escaped. the train suffered no damage.
Henry Charles Richards of East Finsbury, a noted advocate of old age pensions, dies of heart disease in London at age 78. He was born in 1851.
About 1,000 union workers in Kansas City state a labor strike today over higher wages. The group, predominantly Black, halts nearly all building operations in the city.
Billings June 1 Special Dispatch. Tarry Overturf a 22 year old Omaha native and civil engineering graduate was killed by a bolt during a storm near Custer station on the Crow reservation east of Billings. He sought shelter under a tree with a companion whose shock left him briefly stunned but quickly recovered. The body was brought to Billings and an inquest was deemed unnecessary. Relatives from Omaha will arrive tomorrow to claim the body. Overturf had been in the area about a month working with a government engineering corps.
Lake Mohonk N Y June 1 Interparliamentary Peace union appoints a committee to draft a model treaty to prevent future congressional trouble. A letter from Congressman Bartholdi notes this. Today’s session also places a permanent international parliament on the program for the Brussels meeting Aug 28. Henry B McFarland opened with the first address.
Trinidad Colo June 1 The American Savings bank closed its doors with liabilities of 176000 and assets of 196000 I l Bridge vice president and cashier said the bank is solvent and depositors will be cared for despite disputes among officers over policy and the temporary suspension.
In Wenatchee, Washington, two sons aged 11 and 9 of Fred Cooper were killed when struck by lightning while playing in the Cooper orchard during a severe thunderstorm. Two younger children were stunned as the storm, the worst in years for the area, raged nearby.
The steamer Dakota of the Great Northern Steamship Co arrives at Coronel Chile from New York in 36 days on a west coast run to San Francisco and Seattle.
In Paris on June 1 W K Vanderbilt horses dominated the Bois de Boulogne meeting with Malta winning the Prix de Lama and Bengal taking the Prix Malleret indicating strong form for the American owner in European racing.
Clarence B. Young remains guarded in Philipsburg as officers and railway detectives say his confession on the Messenger Lanb train wrecking case is credible. A photo session in the sheriff's office featured Young wearing a photographer's hat and smiling, and Detective Goddard prepared to push the case toward the June district court term.
Missoula reports on a new Montana law expanding penalties for railroad holdups. The statute declares any person who derails wrecks or endangers trains for gain a felony with a potential five years to life imprisonment, reflecting a shift from prior charges of burglary and grand larceny.

Mrs Clementine Des Rosier 38 shot herself with a 44 caliber revolver at her home 653 Placer street after a period of mental distress linked to a death and neighbor disputes. Police and coroner attended. inquest set for 3 pm. Her husband Joseph Des Rosier. no children.
Eugene Oregon June 1 A double murder occurred about 12 miles east of the city when John Richards shot and killed his sister Sanford Skinner and her husband after a heated dispute. Richards is in custody and the sheriff heads to bring him to the county jail. Details remain sparse.
President Roosevelt will begin a southern tour on the night of October 11. The trip is linked to plans for an extraordinary congressional session to be called after the November elections, a statement issued today confirms.
George J. Kindel, a Denver manufacturer, was arrested on charges of criminal libel for printing a circular featuring Henry B. Hyde beside two outlaws with the caption Kindel's gallery of dead cheaters. He refused the recognizance bond and was jailed. the arrest followed a complaint by District Attorney G. A. Stidger.
John Murray Mitchell of New York, a prominent Republican and coal mine owner with interests in Pennsylvania, died at his country home from cancer of the intestines on June 1 in Tuxedo Park.
Charles D. Lane, president of the Wild Goose Mining Company, which owns about 100 claims and a $2,000,000 property, sold his stock to San Francisco capitalists for $600,000. The deal closed May 24 after a pending period. Lane organized the company in 1889 and last year the operation earned about $1,000,000 in gold and paid a 30 percent dividend on $1,000,000. He cites inability to overcome the controlling faction as the reason for selling. Lane travels to Seattle from San Francisco.
