Fire truck skid hits street car near Montana crossing

A Quartz Street fire truck skidded into a streetcar at a railroad crossing on South Montana yesterday while avoiding downed gates. Driver John Cline escaped serious injury though the centrifugal pump and brakes were torn loose. The right side of the truck and fenders suffered heavy damage, but the crew halted the vehicle without further harm.

July 27 Indianapolis officials of the United Mine Workers of America awaited a reply from the coal operators association to a telegram requesting an immediate joint conference of miners and operators in the central competitive field. John L. Lewis urged orderly remedies through existing industry machinery to restore normal conditions and end regional Indiana and Illinois strikes. Thomas Brewster said he had not received Lewis's commitment and noted government consent may be needed for any action. the operators' scale committee had not functioned since the wage award.
