Governor W S Stewart speaks at the seventh annual Judith Basin Farmers Picnic in Moccasin noting Montana’s farming rise. He cites leaps in corn hay potatoes oats and wheat production from 1900 to 1914 and projects 1915 wheat yield around 40 000 000 bushels, asserting agriculture drives the state’s future.
In San Francisco on July 23 Theodore Roosevelt praised Montana at the Panama Pacific Exposition. He toured the agricultural building, spoke of Montana’s early cowboy days, and lauded the state’s grain and agricultural fame. New York July 2 A Supreme Court order directs the state to show cause why a motion for a new trial should not be granted to Charles Becker condemned to die next Wednesday at Sing Sing. Chief counsel Wourke Cochran argues Becker would face cross examination without limits and cites newly discovered affidavits and testimony from Father Curry, Rose, Ginty Kaufmann and Harris asserting Becker’s claimed innocence and alleged involvement of others in the Rosenthal murder.
The White Star liner Cmyric sailed for Liverpool today with 1500 tons of cargo, carrying 329 passengers, only Frank T. Ginson of Buffalo being American. The cargo includes supplies for Great Britain such as motorcars, trucks, aeroplanes, empty shells, and cartridges.
Washington denounces Germanys latest note as very unsatisfactory failing to address key differences and proposing only partial suspension of humane principles. The United States says it will not discuss Britains policy with Germany and insists neutrals rights and lives must be protected even amid war. The note notes US readiness to act as intermediary and to seek free seas while urging adherence to law and humanity.
President Wilson ordered reports on national defense to be given personally to him by the heads of the war and navy departments. He seeks an equal, efficient navy and a practical army program with training for citizens, to be discussed after his trip to Congress. The note on submarine warfare preceded the publication of this plan.
