On July 20 at Sandy Hook Shamrock IV defeated American defender Resolute by about two minutes in light winds. Official times were 5 38 06 for Shamrock and 5 48 11 for Resolute with Shamrock finishing ahead by 600 yards at the second mark.
The United States railway labor board granted a 600 million dollar wage increase to about 2 million railroad workers retroactive to May 1, after rejecting union demands for a billion. An average 21 percent wage rise accompanied by an 18 percent freight-rate increase was announced, with details on hourly and monthly gains for engineers conductors and yard staff. A referendum by workers and possible general strike remained under discussion as tariffs and back pay were outlined.
In St Paul Minnesota, public officials bankers and grain men from Minnesota North Dakota South Dakota and Montana met to secure an adequate car supply for the Northwest grain harvest. Committees will heads to Washington to urge the ICC to accelerate car movement. Governors Stewart of Montana signaled support though not present.
The Interstate Commerce Commission issued new orders directing more than twenty railways serving Western Pennsylvania to prioritize winter coal for the Northwest. From July 26, operators must meet Northwest needs first, with embargoes on other movements. H. M. Griggs will set daily shipment quantities from Lake Erie ports to the head of the lakes. The measure aims to prevent shortages in Northwest states and Central Canada, as the region faces about 23 million tons short of winter needs requiring over 4,000 cars daily at Lake Erie ports.
Four young women were seriously wounded as Sinn Fein vengeance squads terrorized Cork after the murder of Divisional Commissioner Smyth. Armored vehicles and armed men roamed the streets while Smyth was shot at the Country Club in a dramatic incident that followed his Listowel speech backing anti rebel orders.
Special Dispatch reports Henry Hansen a 46 year old rancher four miles east of Deer Lodge was struck by lightning while raking hay at about 5 pm and died instantly. His two horses were killed. he was born and raised in Deer Lodge and leaves brothers Joseph and Will Hansen and sisters Mrs. Kerruish and Mrs. Cowan. Funeral arrangements pending.
Bozeman Montana shows a population of 6,183, up 1,976 or 21.1 percent. Lincoln Illinois records 11,882 residents, an increase of 990 or 9.1 percent.
Dublin dispatch reports Sinn Fein police bearing armlets inscribed Irish republican policeman appearing on Dublin streets. An Irish republican detective force is formed as recruitment of Sinn Fein police shifts to volunteers, effective immediately.
Helena July 20. The Montana Public Service Commission says steam heating rates for 235 Butte district consumers will likely rise next fall if coal prices stay volatile. The commission granted Montana Power Company’s increase from the 1913 tariff and adopted a new measurement method based on actual steam usage rather than connected radiation, replacing the previous charge.
Bozeman news reports Senator David B. Christie died at Clyde Park from a heart attack. He lived in Bridger canyon 35 years, and with his wife recently returned from Pasadena. They observed a golden anniversary on July 4. Survived by wife and nine children. Burial likely in Bozeman after funeral arrangements.
Secretary of the Navy Daniels and Secretary of the Interior Payne travel with Admiral Hugh Rodman aboard the battle ship Idaho to Seattle, arriving July 22 after an Alaska inspection trip of coal and oil fields and the government railroad.
Helena July 20. Filings show W W McDowell of Butte a Democrat for governor has filed his completed nominating petition. Also listed F Leonard of Miles City a Republican for judge Sixteenth district.
Helena July 20. E A Kimp ton wealthy rancher of Radersburg Mont died at a local hospital this morning from Rocky Mountain spotted fever. He had been ill since July 1 making this the first local death from the disease this year.
Benson Minn July 20 The Rev O J Kvale of Benson is disqualified as the Republican nominee for Congress in Minnesota s Seventh District after a district court ruling. Judge Albert Johnson declared A J Volstead duly nominated by the Republicans and noted Kvale s non partisan league endorsement. The action cited corrupt practices charges from Kvale alleging Volstead atheist and hostile to the Bible along with remarks about Kvale s preaching on the miracle of the five loaves and two fishes. An appeal to the state supreme court is anticipated if the ruling stands.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Paul Schrimscher were killed when their car was struck by a Southern Pacific train at Alford station near Harrisburg Oregon. Two others died: Robert Rowe son of Mrs Schrimscher and Mrs R V Joste of Oakland California Mrs Schrimscher's mother.
A heavy windstorm with light rain struck Deer Lodge on Monday evening causing extensive damage. Telephone wires were down across town and several poles toppled. The Methodist church lost a chimney and cornice when a tree fell. Traffic on Missouri avenue halted for hours as a large tree blocked William Volemain's residence.
Jack Johnson, former heavyweight champion, crossed the border from Lower California and was brought to Los Angeles and jailed. Federal officials say he will likely be sent to Chicago tomorrow to serve a white slavery act sentence. A jail search found $450 and a pair of dive clocks.
Governor Cox, speaking to the Democratic National Committee in Columbus, accuses Republicans of raising a campaign fund “sufficient to shock the sensibilities.” He vows continued senatorial investigations into campaign finances, pledges frequent public accounting, and predicts a November victory. Roosevelt supports Cox as running mate. George H. White elected DNC chairman, succeeding Homer S. Cummings.
A Findlay Ohio Elks delegation surprised Senator Harding at Marion with a curtain raiser on his lawn. Harding joined in handshakes and a brief talk praising war work by the Elks and recalling his Marion band days. Rep R Clintcole invited a Findlay homecoming. Harding said he would drop in if possible. He hailed Elks patriotism and service, then politics were avoided.
