The Associated Press reports the United States sees Far Eastern questions as essential to any disarmament plan. Japan’s Tokio envoy signaled approval of discussing disarmament but resisted broad Pacific topics, fearing diplomatic balance shifts. If all invited nations come, general guidelines may fix the topics. China has accepted unconditionally.
In a July 14 report from Washington the Senate Finance Committee heard that Premier Lloyd George had, in August 1920, written to President Wilson seeking guidance on canceling inter allied debts. Witnesses described alleged infidelity by James A. Stillman as two women aboard his yacht Modesty, Leeds and Helen named as companions. The defense sought to counter claims he fathered his wife Guy Stillman, presenting testimony of years prior at the Pocantico estate and a New York hotel suite.
Alliance Nebraska July 14 Associated Press reports one person killed and several missing after a cloudburst floods the White River country near Crawford. Dozens of ranch homes ruined, livestock losses tallied, a woman drowned in her bed near Andrews. Five bridges washed out on a railway between Crawford and Andrews. Telegraph lines down, communications disrupted.
Ohio July 14 The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co the area’s largest independent steel plant announces a wage reduction cutting common labor from six to zero cents. The plant employs 16 000 men. Independent steel firms in the district also announce wage actions.
The Kaber case in Veland involves Eva Cath Kaber on trial for the murder of her husband Daniel F Kaber. Defense rested after she refused to enter the courtroom for examinations by physicians to assess mental condition. Rebuttal testimony from the state expected to continue. arguments of counsel to follow as jurors are charged tomorrow.
Premier Lloyd George and Eamonn de Valera met at the premier's residence and spent over two hours discussing Irish questions. A joint communique was planned, signaling cautious hope for settlement amid cordial exchanges despite distinct positions. Crowds in Downing Street prayed and cheered as de Valera arrived and departed.
A fierce gun duel in Belfast, ongoing from morning, drew police and military in armored cars to restore order. Civilians were wounded as streets closed, tram service halted, and ambulances ferried the injured until curfew hour ended the riot.
Philipsburg July 14 A 1 year old Mary Lord suffered a probable skull fracture after a wagon accident when a frightened horse kicked the dashboard. Dr Power traveled over mountain roads, 60 miles, to reach a Butte hospital for immediate surgery as other physicians prepared for a consult. The child was riding with her parents at a Methodist picnic near J J Neal farm Toreloc.
In Seattle July 14 police sought four suspects after a Northwest Trust and Savings Bank messenger was robbed at a busy street corner. The four men, two in white attire who held the messenger at gunpoint, and two others waiting in a car, fled with 250 dollars as serial numbers and signatures were broadcast to aid identification.
Two eyewitnesses testified before Coroner Carey at Butte that John F. McRae gave his life to save another during a cattlemans attack. The hearing blamed Metzac’s death on the pay corps and revealed tense exchange as witnesses recounted the fatal moment and the accused suspect.
Walter Billings, a wealthy businessman, was whipped and doused with crude oil and cotton by masked assailants on Tuesday night and forced to flee to Excelsior Springs, Missouri within 48 hours as police were told.
Special Dispatch to the Standard from Three Forks Montana July 14 After a nine day search with nearly 100 men and boys along the river between Toston and Townsend, the body of Mrs. Albert Smith Jr. was found twelve miles below Townsend. She disappeared on July 4 while visiting her in law near Crow Creek. Funeral plans were announced for tomorrow. She was a Broadwater county pioneer, leaving sons Albert Leslie and Willis.
