After five hours the jury found Lennox guilty of first degree murder in the killing of John R. Williams. The confession by Lennox was cited as the decisive factor in the verdict.
James Martin and Lennox were tried in Silver Bow county for the murder of Fireman John R. Williams during a nighttime hold up at Silver Bow Junction on May 19. A jury found Martin guilty in the first degree after a conflicting confession from Lennox and dramatic courtroom testimony. Lennox’s trial is set for Monday with J. Bruce Kremer as his counsel. The verdict awaits formal judgment in one week.
Bloodhounds and deputy sheriffs scoured brush near Covington all day but failed to trap the fugitive Harry Tracy. Reports of a battle and deaths circulated, yet evidence of Tracy's whereabouts remained elusive as dawn broke.
In Portland on July 1 A L Belding a bartender shot and killed his wife Mrs A L Belding and his mother in law Mrs L McCroskey and fatally wounded his father in law L M McCroskey and mortally wounded Frank Woodward an inmate. He then fired at Woodward and after the rampage surrendered to police. He said the family had "been misusing me for years" and expressed regret only that he did not kill them all.
Special Dispatch to the Standard reports Billings July 11 that De Laftin, manager of Donovan McCormick company’s grocery department, severed his left thumb while adjusting a plug tobacco cutter. The knife shut down on his hand and Dr Chapple dressed the wound.
J. F. McRae of North Yakima Washington arrived in Billings last night with several ears of thoroughbred lambs he will sell to local growers in the vicinity.
In Johnstown Pennsylvania a heroic rescue party pulls dozens from the Rolling Mill Mine after a disaster. Dozens are recovered including the dead and some survivors endure long hours underground with hopes of saving others.
Johnstown July 12 143 of 600 men who entered the Rolling Mill mine are dead and 22 rescued after an explosion. Officials say 3 still unaccounted for as 35 more bodies expected at daylight bringing total dead to about 125. Rescuers fought darkness and debris to reach survivors and recover bodies including 39 found in reach of the main heading.
