Copperopolis Towns Name and Smelter Site Near Warm Springs
The New Northwest reports in June 1888 that Anaconda smelters rise on the north side of Warm Springs creek near bluffs about 20 miles from Deer Lodge, 26 from Butte, and 24 from Deer Lodge. A ditch seven and a half feet wide advances toward grading ground for the smelter, with eighty workers. Railroad surveys run up the valley center, circling to the right to cross the creek toward the smelter. Opposite the smelter, half a mile away, the new Copperopolis town site is surveyed on a level plain, framed by timbered mountains to the southwest and snow caps most of the year, with the creek and railroad between town and work progressing.
