The New York Herald notes Henry Phipps donated a large sum to Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore to establish a psychiatric clinic. Friends say his concern for Harry Kendall Thaw and his belief in treatment of insanity drove the gift, with Phipps long active in promoting scientific study of mental disease. He once toured Dixmont asylum incognito and has sought reforms in asylum methods, preferring confinement only for the criminally insane or incurable. He and Andrew Carnegie clashed on the subject, and Phipps required his sons' consent for major expenditures.
