Washington June 0. Senator Bailey of Texas assaulted Senator Beveridge of Indiana after adjournment. Bailey dragged away as he lunged and threatened to kill Beveridge over remarks about Penfield. Beveridge stood his ground and later expressed regret, saying he held no personal grievance.

Elkins Pushes Cuba Annexation Among Senate Debates

In Washington on June 30 the senate heardMr Elkins of West Virginia argue for annexation of Cuba as in the best interests of both nations. Opponents Mr Platt and Mr Hanna urged against annexation while supporting Cuba’s sovereignty. The session approved bills inclining toward naval pay for Rear Admiral Schley and other measures as discussions continued through the afternoon.

Sheriff and Deputy Die in Oklahoma Outlaw Battle

Guthrie Oklahoma June 30 Sheriff J J Bullard and Under Sheriff Cogburn of Roger Mills county were killed in a 38 minute gun battle as they attempted to arrest an outlaw band. The escape of the rest of the gang is reported with suspicion on the Bert Casey gang active in the area.

Deputies Join Pursuit of Oregon Convicts Near Tacoma

Deputy Sheriff J C FP Johnson and A B Ardy with four men left Tacoma for Rainier to aid neighboring counties in hunting fugitives from Oregon. The men reportedly fled after breaking out of the federal jail aboard McNeill's transport in the heat.
