Cold wave grips Montana with record low temperatures

Special dispatch from Helena reports a broad Arctic air mass driving Montana temperatures to 12 below in Helena and up to 28 below at Marysville with light winds. Weather officials forecast continued subzero weather and new snowfall may follow as high pressure traps cold air over the Northwest. Livestock regions face open ranges and stock losses are not expected to abate soon.

Bitter cold grips Miles City with light snow fall

Special Dispatch to the Standard reports at 6 am the temperature degrees below zero with a light snow earlier in the day. By 7 pm the temp stands 12 below and may drop below 24 by morning. No unusual conditions. feed is plentiful and cattle and sheepmen expect such weather. Ice over a foot thick.

Bitter Montana Cold Wave Strikes Billings Area

A cold wave swept Billings with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees below zero last night and a high of 1 degree today. By eight o clock tonight it stood at 12 below zero with little more than an inch of snow. Strong winds may leave hills bare, but cattle and sheepmen expect grass if the storm stays mild. ranges remain open and hay supplies are ample, with little feeding so far.

A fierce winter blast from the north froze Red Lodge areas with a 21 below reading by 6 pm as a girl suffered serious frostbite while walking from her home. The bitter wind and plummeting thermometer describe a harsh January night and ongoing cold.

In Helena on January 24 the supreme court heard Theodore Mayee’s amended complaint against E D Weed with the same charges as the original. Judge Brantly ordered Weed to file his answer within ten days, as witnesses remain in the city and want speedy proceedings.

Habeas Corpus Action On Helena Woman

Special Dispatch reports the Montana Supreme Court issued a writ of habeas corpus for Nellie Graham now jailed at Fort Benton for an alleged liquor offense. The petition claims wrongful detention and lack of due process, asserting the conviction complaint was not a public offense and jurisdiction was improper. The United States revenue cutter Hugh McCulloch under Capt. W A Falling departed San Francisco in the afternoon to join the search for the missing British gunboat Condor. The voyage will cruise north toward the mouth of the Columbia River and then toward Honolulu, Victoria.

Helena report states Thomas Flynn a laborer died suddenly of heart disease this morning on Rodney Street near his home. He was found unconscious by two men and died after being carried to Walker's grocery store. He had been unwell and visited a saloon for whiskey earlier. He left a wife. No inquest. Rail chiefs defend mergers to advance rates and deny trust aim

James J. Hill testified before the Interstate Commerce Commission that rate competition rarely lowers prices and that harmony among Northern Pacific Great Northern and Burlington interests kept rates lower in the Northwest. He described the Northern Securities plan as a way to consolidate old interests, not to form a trust, and said the Burlington purchase was a necessity.
