Washington January 16 President Wilson was asked by Samuel Gompers and the executive council of the American Federation of Labor to approve the immigration bill now before him and to back final passage of the seamen's bill to regulate convict labor and a workmen's compensation measure for interstate commerce workers. The president gave no definite promises but Gompers said he was encouraged and that Wilson's attitude was cordial and sympathetic.

In Quincy Massachusetts a torpedo destroyer named Cushing was launched in honor of Lt Commander William Cushing, famed for Civil War actions. A daughter of the vessel’s namesake christened the crate.
