An early January attempt to dynamite the Cold Spring dam on the Sauk River near Saint Cloud failed to cause serious damage as nearby windows were watered by water but no crew was found. J Henry Jurgens, longtime Montana pioneer and former territorial legislator, died at the home of Mrs Fred Whiteside in Helena. Born in Minnesota in 1830s, he led a wagon train during 1864 conflicts with Indians, founded the Alder Gulch trading post, and helped in early Helena Mason circles. He later managed the Tramway mine in Butte for F Augustus Heinze, married Cornelia Bateman in 1866, and moved to be with his daughter about fifteen years ago. his widow Frances Toble resides in California.
Special dispatch from Three Forks reports county attorney and sheriff’s office pursue a theory that Harry L. Walker was killed in a home dispute with robbery as a possible motive rather than the direct cause. Two shots to his temple imply two assailants. others may have aided in disposing of the body and car. A forged note allegedly from Walker was used to conceal the crime and suggests a card-room confrontation before his disappearance. J D Highsmith a 45 year old rancher near Billings was shot and killed by neighbor T Henry who had gone to the Highsmith ranch after stray horses. Henry is jailed in Billings. Highsmith's wife and 6 year old son witnessed the shooting which, Henry says, happened after Highsmith ordered him off the place and then rushed him. He died at 7 pm in a local hospital following the 2 pm shooting.
